When you have a heart to stay home with your children, you might be concerned about the income options for stay-at-home moms, no matter where you live. As a Jamaican stay-home mom, it was not easy to find legitimate work from home jobs. The good news is that remote income options are real, and I’m about to share with you how I make money at home as a stay-at-home mom.

Freelance Writing Can Bring in Income as a Stay-at-Home Mom
Freelance writing has been a key source of income for me as a stay-home mom.
My writing jobs have paid me from 3 cents per word all the way up to 5 cents per word in USD. However, I do remember one gig that paid me $100 USD to write 800 words – that works out to $USD 1.25 per word.
I had found the website and noticed they wanted writers, so I pitched them, and they actually accepted my pitch! This was back in 2020, and it still ranks as my highest paid writing job to date! (Here’s the link to that article BTW: This Sauce Is Like a Jamaican Jerk Festival In a Bottle | The Discoverer )
In my experience, freelance writing can either be one-time gigs or steady, long-term income. You might even be fortunate enough to find a full-time writing job.
There were two times I had long-term writing arrangements – one was with a technology website (which I foolishly gave up..sigh) and the other was with an ergonomics website which eventually shut down…sigh again.
Beyond all my sighing, though, I’m just trying to show you that these jobs are real and available, bearing in mind that I am a Jamaican, working from home in Jamaica.
Freelance writing is definitely one of the income options for stay-at-home moms, no matter where you live.

Where Can You Find Freelance Writing Jobs?
Most times I have found freelance writing jobs on ProBlogger.com.
Come to think of it, ALL my writing jobs came from the ProBlogger Job board except the Jamaican Jerk one.
So, you could browse that website and see what they have to offer from time to time.
There’s also We Work Remotely that sometimes brings up writing jobs. You’ll have to scan through though, because there are way more technology and engineering jobs there.
I also managed to find a couple on Indeed.com. That’s where I got hired for the 5 cents per word gig, and that one was with a Christian company. (Perfect!)
Now, let me tell you, don’t scoff too much at the low writing pay rates. When you look up writing rates online, 3 cents per word is considered chump change, but when it began to add up in Jamaican dollars, it helped me out A LOT!
(Like I bought my laptop and my Piteba oil express and shopped online with that money.)
Other than using job boards, you can search up various websites, see if they accept writers, and pitch them! It worked for me once!
KDP Publishing is a Way to Make Money as a Stay-at Home Mom
When I got my first email notification about my KDP royalty payment, I was blown away.
Not by the amount, though, but I was amazed that it was real.
Here’s how I started writing books and selling them on Amazon KDP.
I have always been serious about giving my children a solid Christian upbringing. That includes providing them with Bible-based material to watch and read.
The ideas have always been rolling around in my mind, but I had just not gotten around to start writing the books.
Then I tried once with Amazon KDP and had a scare about all the formatting required, so I ran away for months, maybe a year.
But for some glorious reason and through spiritual endowment, I thought of trying all over again.
This time, the process seemed so much easier, and I managed to churn out a couple books.
Now Amazon is not the only independent publishing provider, but they are probably the only ones who allow you to do it for free, with a corresponding cut out of your profit, of course.
But you know what, I listed my books with them, and a couple of them got sold, and they sent me the money – it works! So self-publishing with Amazon KDP is one of the income options for stay-at-home moms, no matter where you live.
What edifying, creative work is rolling around in your head stay-home mom? Maybe you could give the Amazon KDP programme a try too.
Online Teaching Can Bring in Income as a Stay-at-Home Mom
As I have perused the internet for online income options, I would often come across teaching jobs. Most of them were asking you to teach English as a second language. The problem with those is you had to be from the USA or have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate. Of course I am zero in both of those, so I often overlooked these job listings.
However, it has turned out that I found a Jamaican online school based here in Jamaica. Yes, I work from home teaching classes on Zoom. Shout out to Western STEM Academy for this one!
And just in case you want to work from home for an online Jamaican school, here’s the email address to submit your resume:

You never know when they might be hiring again!

Private Tutoring is a Great Side Hustle for a Stay-at-Home Mom
If you like teaching but don’t want to commit to a full-time setup, maybe you could try offering tutoring services.
Depending on where you live you might be able to get extra cash by tutoring children in your community.
This you could do in your home, or in their home, or in a community centre.
But you could also arrange for those same lessons to be done online.
That’s what I do.
So, yes, besides teaching for an official school online, I also have a student who I tutor online.
The liberty is amazing because the restrictions of a regular school don’t apply. This would probably be ideal if you are super busy at home doing all the things with your own children (like homeschooling).
Rates are also up to you when you tutor as opposed to your set pay cheque if you work for an official school. Collecting payment can be by cash in hand or, as I have been doing sometimes, by direct deposit as well.
You are also at liberty when it comes to deciding what subjects you want to help out with. The service you offer could even just be homework assistance.
Amazon Affiliate Programme is One of the Income Options for Stay at Home Moms
As a blogger and social media user, I have opted to join the Amazon Affiliate Programme.
And you can too.
You don’t need a website if you already have social media accounts to link products to.
You basically present products to your followers or readers or subscribers (like in YouTube descriptions) that you think they would find helpful. However, the link you use would be connected to you and a commission would be earned from their purchase.
I have links on a few Instagram posts..I think..
But anyway, my main way of posting affiliate links is through this blog.
Links can be interwoven throughout each article you write on your blog, but I also have a separate shopping page that links to special products I think my readers would like.
I am building a Simple Living /Nontoxic Living Shop. So, I have products like manual tools, biodegradable school supplies and nontoxic items for the kitchen and bathroom.
Sometimes it just helps to have all these items curated in one place, so you have a one-stop shop for all the good stuff.
Here’s the link if you want to check it out!
