Is Crochet Hard to Learn?

As someone who learned the basic chain stitch in my early childhood, I can tell you confidently that crochet isn’t hard to learn!

Of course, there are more complicated designs and plans and stitches, but if you can get the basic stitches in hand, there is no limit to what you can make for your family.

Additionally, there is no hard-and-fast rule that says you have to use the standard crochet threads.

I’ve seen homemakers who crocheted scraps of fabric into amazing items.

Furthermore, you can either make a DIY crochet needle or buy larger sized needles to match the fabric scraps you want to work with. So, let’s see how many of these 10 easy things to make from crochet we can get done.

A Beanie is one of the 10 Easy Things to Make from Crochet

My son recently became aware of what a beanie is, and he now loves them. His Dad bought him one last December and he wants to wear it everywhere.

Now I’m thinking I need to make a few more for him instead of buying them.

Here is a great tutorial you can use for inspiration to get you started. I love this tutorial because you can use it to learn the basic single chain stitch as well.

Can You Make Crochet Slippers?

I’m glad you asked! So, the answer is yes, and if nothing else gets you excited in this list, I don’t know what will!

This will take your journey to self-sufficiency to a new level.

I can imagine doing this with old cloth scraps or even banana fibre!

Here’s a video tutorial to start you off. Don’t be intimidated by how fast she seems to go – if you made it through the beanie, you are sure to spot some familiar techniques.

How to Make a Crochet Potholder

If beanies and slippers are not your focus right now, and you want something more practical for the home, a potholder is always a good start.

This tutorial is hosted by a very pleasant crochet tutor, and she’ll walk you through the steps to the end.

I also notice that she does her very first knot (called a slip knot) using her crochet needle instead of by fingers only.

You will also find that different size needles and other terms keep being mentioned – trust me, just do as they teach you on each tutorial and go read up on the rest later! lol!

So here is Tiffany on how to make a crochet potholder:

Easy Crochet Headband

So, we came back to clothing but hear me out – it’s not as involved as a beanie or a slipper, plus it can be versatile as a scrunchie or even a curtain tie. I think you’ll have fun and if nothing else, you can use it to get in some more practice with your basic crochet stitches.

You might even surprise yourself by venturing into a different style from the one you’ll see in this video guide.

Easy Way to Make Crochet Blanket

If you have children that love to snuggle or if you want to be ready for colder months of the year, you will definitely want to look at how to make a crochet blanket.

By this time, you are probably comfortable enough to try your own style and approach.

For instance, where yarn is featured in this video tutorial, you could try to replace it with cloth scraps. Imagine how satisfying it would feel to convert all those old clothes, sheets and curtains into a comfy crochet blanket.

I know I would feel victorious to see less waste and less money spent!

So have a go at this video tutorial for making a crochet blanket. Take note of the very cute and comfy-looking jumbo needle – I imagine it would feel super comfortable. She also has a very cool intro/background music. (If that helps!)

Make a Rag Rug from Crochet

Another fun project you can make for your family with crochet is a rag rug (say that 5 times fast – even typing it was a challenge!)

I like this project because it gives you the opportunity to repurpose old and unwanted fabric and give them new life. It also gives you the opportunity to save money and have the satisfaction of adding decor to your home that you made by hand.

This crochet tutor also has a website you can use to supplement your crochet adventures!

So, without further delay, let’s dive into this video tutorial about how to crochet a cloth scrap rug.

Make a Pencil Case by Crochet

We have stepped into true adventures. Pencil cases?

Yes, and don’t worry – I have an easy video for you to watch and follow along. There’s even a button attachment so you can finally use a few of those buttons you had been saving! (Or am I the only button saver?)

I can see these as cute gifts to start off your homeschooling year – a different colour for each child would be so sweet.

You could make one for your living room coffee table as well. That way your husband or guests won’t have to turn the house upside down searching for a pen.

To be honest, I think these could double as phone cases too!

Let me know how many you end up making and the colours you opt for!

Here’s the video, jazz music included!

Make Steering Wheel Crochet Cover

As if making crochet pen/pencil cases wasn’t enough, we’re now going to decorate our cars too.

Just be sure your husband is ok with your flowery vibe. Otherwise, you might want to tone it down and keep it (albeit painfully) simple.

This video is hosted by a real-life mom with a little baby and that should encourage you to try in the midst of your busy life.

And you know what? She says something at one point in the video – selling these things on Etsy…

Hmm…

Pray about it and go for it if you feel the release of the Holy Spirit!

So, here’s the video tutorial for making steering wheel covers by crochet.

Make Crochet Tote Bag

As we come back down to more sober things to make from crochet, we focus on a very practical tote bag.

Think market, grocery store, gardening, going for walks, you name it. A tote bag is a must-have.

And since we need the things so much, why not let us make them by hand from crochet?

The great thing is that I can see this being, once again, made from cloth scraps. But you don’t have to be so adventurous – just follow the video instructions carefully!

Easy Crochet Table Runner

Finally, we bring it right back home, and to the dining table, no less.

It is the place where we sit together for our family meals as we talk, laugh and eat.

What better way to add your hand-made touch to the home than to the dining table?

Let us see how we can make a beautiful table placemat or runner that will be a blessing to your family.
