Even as a Christian mom there will be days when you need to know how to handle a misbehaving child at home. Let’s dive into what a real-life mom has learned about this issue!

How to Handle a Misbehaving Child at Home

  1. Accept that your child is not perfect
  2. Appreciate the role God gave you as a parent
  3. Base your discipline on Scripture

Your Children Have a Sinful Nature

I was once asked by a young lady if my children give trouble.

I looked at her incredulously😧🤨……

I asked her if she was serious😆.

Of course, my three children born to Christian parents, who were given Biblical names and whose births were prophesied, give me trouble!

The Bible says in Proverbs 22:15 –

“Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction drives it far from him.”

Although I would want my children to be perfect, I cannot deny the reality of their sinful nature🙋🏽‍♀️.

This brings me to my next point: I have a responsibility to let my children know they have a sinful nature and to show them why they need a Saviour!

So yes, my two daughters and son are sometimes disobedient, petty, selfish, stubborn, and proud liars.

I know it doesn’t sound cute, but the sooner you as a parent admit who your children are, the sooner you will get serious about doing what Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says:

“And these words which I command thee this day shall be in thine heart, and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children…”

I’ll be the first to admit though that constantly correcting my children is far from the easiest task.

Sometimes I honestly feel like just leaving them to do what they want to do.

I get tired and weary of their constant resistance and willful opposition of my instructions. Sigh!

It’s not an easy battle and I frequently want to let them be🙋🏾‍♀️.

But here comes the Holy Spirit who knows my heart. He allowed me to find two Scripture verses in Proverbs 29 that have beautifully convicted me.

Here’s the first one from verse 15:

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

And now here’s the other one from Proverbs 29:17

Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

I must say it’s that second one that really got me.

I was feeling unhappy and rather grieved with my son about correcting him, but this Scripture is promising me it won’t be forever 😮🥳😌!

In fact, it promises me a reward of rest and delight. (Believe me when I say I can’t wait!)

They need you.

They have some behaviours in them that won’t do them any good if things remain the way they are now.

It might feel like pulling teeth for now, but one day they will thank you for the right way you raised and guided them.

In the meantime, what other Scriptures have you found helpful for hanging in there as a parent?
